WHY I STARTED THE QUARANTINED GARDENER IN 2020 & SOON BECAME THE SOVEREIGN GARDENER
Origins
When the pandemic restrictions escalated, I could count on my houseplants. But local grocery stores became sparse and then we learned which Pennsylvania businesses were considered by the state to be “life-sustaining.” Garden centers didn’t make the cut. Alone in quarantine for all of spring 2020, my spirit sank. Suddenly, friends and family started calling me for advice on how to grow their own food. “I don’t have a green thumb,” some said. A green thumb is just a glowing passion for fresh food and flowers. All we need to nourish our souls in nature are seeds, soil, and sun. My intention is to inspire fellow gardeners, new and seasoned, to embrace food freedom and seed sovereignty and learn along the way. Integrating my desire to advocate for individual liberties, alternative healing, creative freedom and storytelling, I am now The Sovereign Gardener planting victory gardens in the midst of our country’s sociopolitical culture war. Social pressures on speech, safety, and access to food spaces are invading a number of settings meant for agriculture. Despite such restrictions, we are free to grow outside. Our health is in our hands.
